Feature Article - 4 Ways To Add Music Education To Your Family

This is NOT an article about how music education is vital and necessary for child development!  Parents already know this!  Besides, there are literally hundreds of research studies and thousands of articles explaining all the scientific benefits way better than I could. The question isn’t SHOULD you include music training for your child, but rather HOW to include music training, especially with today’s safety concerns and parents’ already hectic lifestyle of balancing work and family life.  So here are four easy ways parents can include music education into their child’s training.

  1. Listen to music. One way to show the value of music is to have music playing in your home. Yes, classical music should be a part of this, but also exploring different kinds of musical genres and instruments is important. The great thing about listening to music is that it can be done while doing something else such as cleaning, cooking or eating.

  2. Sing with your child. There are tons of songs to sing with very young, pre-school aged kids, but singing is also important to your school-age and teen-age children. Older children enjoy songs with silly words, songs that can be sung as a round, and favorite pop or rap songs that are easy to join. You know the experience adults have when the song, “Sweet Caroline” plays and everyone joins in the chorus, “Sweet Caroline, bop, bop, bop, …,” you can have that same experience with your family. Maybe there is a song that each of you have a special solo part, or maybe you each create your own words to a melody. Family singing can be a lot of fun and a bonding time with everyone. This is a great activity for car rides!

  3. Dance with your child. Share those crazy, freestyle dance moves, teach the latest hip-hop dance to each other, or learn a new step together. A little exercise, a little music, and a great release of frustrations and stress from the events of the day. What a positive way to teach children how to unwind and share love with family simultaneously.

  4. Take online instrument lessons. Online lessons are a great way to keep your child safe as well as learn something new. They are different from regular online school in that your child is focused on playing the instrument instead of watching a screen. Also, parents can learn along with the child so the experience is collaboration as well as learning a new skill. Plus, one of the best parts of this activity is that there is no travel time!

Move Over Mozart is offering two great online programs.  Crescendo Kids is designed for beginning students ages 3 1/2 to 12 years.  Private Lessons are for older beginners, such as adults and teen-agers, as well as more advanced lessons for younger students.  Click the link to find a class that is a fit for you and your family.

Pre-Reading - Ages 3 - 5 years, or students not yet reading,
We use a color-coded method for the students to match their five fingers to five keys on the piano.  New songs using only those 5 notes are given each week.

Primary - Ages 5 -7 years or older and brand new to music,
This group is for the very basics of piano playing.  Students learn to play simple rhythms, correct hand position, and the names of the white keys on the piano.

Beginning Elementary - Ages 7-12 years or younger and reading notes,
This is for students just starting to read notes on the staff.  Students are taught how the staff relates to the piano and how to translate the notes to making music.  Also, having the students memorize a few key notes on the staff will help greatly with their ability to read music.

Advanced Elementary - Ages 7 - 12 years with previous piano lessons
This group already reads notes on the staff and can immediately identify many of the notes by name.  They will learn more advanced technique and music theory beyond the initial basics of learning to play.

Parents Ask Pam

Have a question for Miss Pam? You can email, text message, or message on Facebook your questions. She will respond immediately to you, and your question might be featured in future newsletters.

Q: What is the time commitment needed for your piano classes?

A: Our program is paced at each student's level and speed. You are welcome to practice or not practice as much as it seems appropriate for your child. Of course, we will always encourage more playing because the more the student plays between lessons, the more they will get out of the lessons. However, whatever works for you and your family is what is best. Our Crescendo Kids Online works well with about 5 minutes of daily practice. But our goal with this program is to encourage students to practice more, getting them ready for private lessons, in which 30 minutes of daily practice is expected.
