Feature Article - Crescendo Kids: Your Child's First Step to Piano Mastery!

By Pamela Cornell, Director

Are your kids eager to start playing the piano but not quite ready for traditional private lessons? Our new and improved Crescendo Kids Online piano program is the perfect solution! Designed as a bridge for young learners, this program prepares children for a lifetime of musical enjoyment.

Why Crescendo Kids?

Age-Appropriate Learning: Traditional lessons involve 30-minute, one-on-one sessions where students spend 2-3 hours a week practicing on their own. While this is great for older children, it can be overwhelming for younger kids. Our program caters to the developmental stages of children as young as 3.5 years old.

Proven Success: With over 30 years of experience, Crescendo Kids has proven to be an excellent way for young children to learn music. These sessions reduce pressure, foster a sense of community, and make learning fun and engaging.

Innovative Online Program: Since 2020, we have extended our successful in-person program to an online platform, offering interactive video lessons and private mini-sessions. Our online lessons include:

  • Private, Mini-Lessons: Schedule as many 8-minute sessions as needed. Whether it’s 2-3 times a week or daily, our flexible structure accommodates your child’s pace. (Lessons need to be at least 24-hours apart and 24-hours notice are required to cancel or reschedule a lesson without a late fee.)

  • Progressive Video Lessons: No need to wait a week for the next lesson. Your child can move forward as quickly or slowly as they prefer.

  • Interactive Practice App: Our app tracks practice time, provides in-app awards, and features a weekly leaderboard to keep kids motivated.

Exciting Practice Incentives: We make daily practice fun and rewarding. Kids earn colorful brag tags for reaching practice milestones as well as other accomplishments such as finishing a lesson book, listening to classical music, or participating in a recital. Our app also tracks practice streaks, ensuring that every effort is recognized and celebrated.

Bridge To Private Lessons: Crescendo Kids, while an excellent beginning piano program, is meant to be a stepping stone to private lessons. As your child develops musically, intellectually and physically, they will be ready for more challenging material and faster paced lessons than what Crescendo Kids is able to provide. Transitioning from Crescendo Kids to private lessons will be smooth and easy. Besides age, the biggest indicator that your child is ready for private lessons is their ability and willingness to play piano every day. If you think your child is ready for more advanced material, schedule your assessment lesson with the link below.

Practice Tip

Consistency is the key. Plan a time, or several times, to go to the piano every day. Maybe this is after brushing your teeth, eating a meal or snack, or at a specific time of the day. What is played and how long the piano time is will be up to the student. Maybe they play fun music they have already learned. Maybe they make up a tune. Maybe a music game is played. Even if the time has only been 2 minutes, when the player is done, let them be done. They can always return later. Short, focused, practiced sessions have been proven to give the best results.

Pre-Reading - Ages 3 - 5 years, or students not yet reading,
We use a color-coded method for the students to match their five fingers to five keys on the piano.  New songs using only those 5 notes are given each week.

Primary - Ages 5 -7 years or older and brand new to music,
This group is for the very basics of piano playing.  Students learn to play simple rhythms, correct hand position, and the names of the white keys on the piano.

Beginning Elementary - Ages 7-12 years or younger and reading notes,
This is for students just starting to read notes on the staff.  Students are taught how the staff relates to the piano and how to translate the notes to making music.  Also, having the students memorize a few key notes on the staff will help greatly with their ability to read music.

Advanced Elementary - Ages 7 - 12 years with previous piano lessons
This group already reads notes on the staff and can immediately identify many of the notes by name.  They will learn more advanced technique and music theory beyond the initial basics of learning to play.

Parents Ask Pam

Have a question for Miss Pam? You can email, text message, or message on Facebook your questions. She will respond immediately to you, and your question might be featured in future newsletters.

Q: We are taking a break for the Summer. Will we still have access to the practice app? Will my kids lose their points and gems?

A:  Yes, you will still have access to the practice app, however, you will not be connected to our studio. This means you won’t be able to communicate with your child’s teacher and your kiddo’s lesson assignments will not get updated. But your child can continue to practice and even earn points or gems. When they return to lessons, we will send you our studio code so your practice app can be reconnected. No points or gems will be lost.
