Feature Article - Fun Ways to Keep Kids Excited About Piano

Summertime has finally come!  Kids are out of school, the weather is warmer, and vacation trips are anticipated!  This can be an excellent opportunity for increased piano time!  But then the kiddos have other ideas!  Here are some ideas to keep piano time fresh and fun, even during the summer.

One thing I love about Summer is the change in routine!  Each day can be a different schedule sometimes.  Use this to your advantage.  Have piano time early in the morning, maybe right after breakfast but before dashing off to a play date.  Or have piano after dinner after the day’s festivities have died down a bit.  I always think routine is best, but when it isn’t possible, find a time to schedule the piano time around the different activities.

Listen to classical music.  Listen to live music.  In “normal” summers, many cities have weekly live concerts in their parks.  These are free and a great family adventure. This is a great opportunity to support local musicians, give your kids exposure to different kinds of musical genres and instruments, and have family bonding time.  Listening to music is also a great motivator to playing an instrument.  Don’t have free live concerts in your area?  Remember those old-fashioned cartoons with Bugs Bunny, the RoadRunner or the Smurfs?  The background music of these cartoons is classical music. There are lots fun ways to listen to music.

Is there a song your child really likes?  Maybe they can find the melody on the piano?  Or maybe there is an easy notated version of it online?  Doing something different like this is also a great summer activity, different from the normal routine of regular lessons.  Having a song they like, improvised and perfected is something tangible they can share and be proud of as a new thing they did over the summer.

Have piano time be a special time with one parent.  The parent doesn’t have to have a musical background, just sitting down with the child can be special time.  Or maybe the parent is the student and the child teaches the parent some things they have learned in piano class.  Now that everyone is more familiar with online meetings, the special time could even be online with a grandparent or close family member from another area.  It is this specialness with piano being the center of the event that can help motivate.

Now it is your turn!  What are some special things you do with your child to keep the excitement about learning?

Pre-Reading - Ages 3 - 5 years, or students not yet reading,
We use a color-coded method for the students to match their five fingers to five keys on the piano.  New songs using only those 5 notes are given each week.

Primary - Ages 5 -7 years or older and brand new to music,
This group is for the very basics of piano playing.  Students learn to play simple rhythms, correct hand position, and the names of the white keys on the piano.

Beginning Elementary - Ages 7-12 years or younger and reading notes,
This is for students just starting to read notes on the staff.  Students are taught how the staff relates to the piano and how to translate the notes to making music.  Also, having the students memorize a few key notes on the staff will help greatly with their ability to read music.

Advanced Elementary - Ages 7 - 12 years with previous piano lessons
This group already reads notes on the staff and can immediately identify many of the notes by name.  They will learn more advanced technique and music theory beyond the initial basics of learning to play.

Parents Ask Pam

Have a question for Miss Pam? You can email, text message, or message on Facebook your questions. She will respond immediately to you, and your question might be featured in future newsletters.

Q: We will be on vacation for four weeks this Summer. Can we take a break from piano classes?

A: Yes! One of the great things about our online piano program is its flexibility to work with your schedule. If you are going away for a week, you can schedule 2 mini-lessons the following week. If you are going away for a month or two, we can adjust your subscription renewal date to renew after you get back. Or, since everything is online, you can easily have your lessons at your temporary location. Whichever is easiest for you! Let me know and we can make it happen.
