Parents Ask Pam

Have a question for Miss Pam? You can email, text message, or message on Facebook your questions. She will respond immediately to you, and your question might be featured in future newsletters.

Q:  My child just started taking piano lessons. Will they be able to participate in the Spring Recital?

A:  Yes! Yes! Absolutely yes! First, our recitals are for the experience. There is no grading or judging. We want to celebrate each student’s musical accomplishments. Everybody learns differently and progresses at their own pace. There is no one that is too much of a beginner or too young to participate.

Let us give you a glimpse of what to expect at our Spring Recital. Each recital is just 30 minutes long—short and sweet—because we know how wiggly little ones can get! If your child is scheduled to perform at 3:00, we recommend arriving 30 minutes early. This allows time for your child to settle in, explore the recital setting, and even try out the concert grand piano before the performance begins.

We start every recital with a special moment: all the kids are invited to gather around the grand piano for a hands-on demonstration. They’ll get to look inside, gently touch the strings, and feel the music as the piano is played. They'll also see the fascinating moving parts that bring the instrument to life.

When it's time to perform, students are supported every step of the way. The teacher sits at the piano with copies of each student’s music, ready to help guide hand placement, point to notes, or offer encouragement as needed. We close each recital with a performance by an advanced student, a guest, or sometimes even one of our teachers. Of course, awards and brag tags are given to all participants at the end of each recital. Then we enjoy a brief intermission with goodies—plenty of time to celebrate the performers who just played and to welcome the next group of students getting ready to perform.
