Practice Tip

When I’m struggling with a large piece of music, I remember the riddle, “How do you eat an elephant?” I’m not sure why anyone would ever want to eat an elephant, but if you had to, it is such a large animal, it would be bit intimidating and probably feel very overwhelming. The answer to this riddle is, “One bite at a time.” This is how to approach a new piece of music. Just one “bite” at a time. Break it into small sections and play each section slowly and perfectly. Focus on correct rhythm, correct notes, dynamics, articulation, and anything else in the music that will make it sound beautiful. In small sections, it is much more attainable than trying to play the whole piece all at once.
